GO TO YOUR ROOM !

I borrowed this phrase from the recently deceased Canadian painter Robert Genn who believed that there is only so much we can learn about how to paint from the many fine instructors and resources available today. The true learning comes from going off on our own and just doing it - Go to your room!

I have had the good fortune to take instruction from outstanding artists in Canada and the USA. I continue to work on my own development ( Going to MY room!) . I share, through this blog and workshops, what I have learned and what others have shared with me.

I created this blog primarily for those attending my workshops to keep in touch and to further share as we grow together. If others are interested in following that would be great.

Enjoy the journey.

AND THE LEARNING CONTINUES .........

Jeff Watts and his painting I purchased in 2007 that is on the front of his DVD
Well, our home sale is not going well ( our kids/grandkids are wanting us to move back to Ontario). So we can probably expect to be on Vancouver Island until next year at the least - not a bad place to be - so it's OK.

I need to continue with my development and have decided to take what is probably my  last opportunity to return to the Watts Atelier in Encinitas CA for a serious refresher. Jeff Watts is conducting a six day intensive course on portrait and figurative in oils.

I have spent the past few months using acrylics - plein air and studio. Catching up on commissions and gallery commitments. So I need to budget some time now to get back to oils and to do some portrait pieces. I will start by reviewing Jeffs DVD - which is excellent for quick portrait pieces.

Fun for me is that I purchased the small painting on the front of the video. Its a wonderful little piece and I was so pleased to see it used for the video.

When Jeff's workshop finishes I will attend the Weekend with the Masters near San Diego
where I will spent three days taking plein air with Ken Auster.  I also have his DVD and have just revisited it for the first time in four years. Should be fun.

Cathy will be coming with me and will enjoy two weeks on the beach in Oceanside CA where we have stayed in our RV before - great spot.

Still room in both workshops if you want to join me!!!!!

  1. Hello Brian. While it is unfortunate for you and your family that your move is not going as planned, I hope that it provides the opportunity for you to conduct further workshops on the Island. Have fun in California.

  2. In that case, perhaps you'd consider giving another demo-workshop at the Expo this year?
